How do you make a Greyhound? Well that depends on whether you like a consistent taste or erratic flavors. If you want to know what you’re getting every time, use store bought grapefruit juice. If you’re OK with leaving it up to Mother Nature, go with your own freshly squeezed juice. Sometimes it will be sour or slightly bitter or incredibly sweet. But the unpredictable outcome of a freshly made Greyhound is what makes this drink so interesting and predictably good.

Start by washing, halfing, and squeezing two large grapefruits. For us this produced about 7 ounces of juice which was enough for our two cocktails, but depending on the size and juiciness of your grapefruit, you may get more or less.
Pour the juice through a strainer to catch any seeds and pulpy chunks. Use a spoon or spatula to push the juice through the strainer if it gets stuck.
We like adding salt to our Greyhound which of course then changes its name to a Salty Dog, but it’s the same drink without the salt. You can use table salt or ground Himalayan salt like we did.
Run the rim of the glass through one of the squeezed grapefruits to dampen the glass, then dip it into the salt.
Add a few ice cubes, a couple ounces of your favorite vodka, and serve!
GreyHound Cocktail Recipe (AKA Salty Dog when salt is added)
3 ounces grapefruit juice
2 ounces vodka
Salt is desired
*If the juice is too bitter or sour for your liking, consider adding a teaspoon of sugar, or a tablespoon of liqueur like elderflower, pink grapefruit, pear, triple sec, or limoncello.
