We've all had those moments where we've watched our friend order something unusual or out of character at a bar to try and a) impress the bartender, b) impress their date or c) just plain show off. But the truth is that drink choices say a lot about our mood, our appetite, and our personalities. Here's a quick rundown. Wine by the Glass If you know a thing or two about wine, you'll know which wine to pair with your meal, and which blend of white is dryer than the others. But if you're an expert, you may ask to sample an opened bottle before you buy it, dive into the glass with your nose to "drink in" the aroma, and swirl your wine around in the glass to encourage it to breathe before even taking a sip. And then there are those of you who will swish the wine in your mouth before emitting an awkward, "mmm...interesting." What this order says about you is that you like to take your time, you care about quality, and you aren't always concerned with what other people think about you. You enjoy good wine almost as much as a great conversation.
Glass of Bubbles It's fairly common knowledge that, technically, Champagne is only Champagne if it comes from...well, Champagne. The Champagne region in France is home of the real deal...but the bartender will know what you're talking about when you order it, even if you're only after an inexpensive glass of bubbly. He'll also know that you have a sweet side, are often known to be light-hearted (maybe even flirty), and that you're not one to waste too much time getting the party started...you just have a classy way of going about it. You like to keep things simple but you're never short on sophistication.
Sweet Cocktails Order that Tequila Sunrise, Sex on the Beach, or Apple Martini and immediately peg yourself as someone who a) has a huge sweet-tooth b) prefers alcohol when it tastes like birthday cake, and c) may be more interested in the effects of the cocktail than in the ingredients. Generally though, men and women who order sweet drinks with colorful ingredients and multiple garnishes are outgoing, non-judgmental people who like to have a good time. They also tend to be non-fussy, and very easy to get along with.
Straight Up My female friend who always orders bourbon straight up whenever she goes out gets a lot of attention and reasonably so. People who drink their spirits neat are just plain tough. I always find it disconcerting — who can like the taste of straight up bourbon? I secretly think she's doing it to show guys how confident she is, and how well she can handle her liquor (though you should see her after a couple...). Overall, bourbon drinkers have bold personalities, they aren't afraid to stand out in a crowd, and they encourage a good challenge.
If you're out at a bar with a date you met on www.eharmony.ca or through friends, this may or may not be the drink choice to impress... I'm not convinced. Have said that, I once went on a date with a guy who ordered whiskey straight up (and he even specified which kind he liked) and I found it kind of hot.
Mix It Up I'm often self-conscious at a bar, worried that what I'm ordering makes me sound immature, or worse, indecisive. So sometimes, if I'm having trouble deciding, I'll just order a basic gin and tonic or a vodka soda, which is easily understood no matter how loud the music is. Ultimately you should order what makes you happy, because your smile will say more about you than any drink you order.Anna Leslie writes about fashion, style, and pop culture.
